Nestled in the hills of rural West Virginia,
the Town of Elizabeth is a small community with big heart.
Situated along the Little Kanawha River and a true “Country Roads” drive,
the town of Elizabeth, is a hidden gem in rural West Virginia.
Small in population but big in heart, Elizabeth is home to local businesses,
the robust Wirt County school district, and a community of hard-working citizens.
A welcome note from the Town of Elizabeth Mayor, Bobbi Moore
Hello! It is truly my honor to serve as Mayor for the Town of Elizabeth. I feel an enormous sense of pride as I watch the positive changes happening in our small corner of this wonderful world.
I was not born here but I feel very much at home in our small town. I believe that’s the part I like best – small town living with all the big town amenities just a short drive away. I have also had the opportunity to see firsthand the amazing things that can be achieved when a small community bands together for a common goal, when neighbors help neighbors; basically, when there is a desire to thrive.
Thank you for visiting our website. We are working to make this a place where you not only pay your water bill but you can explore what we have to offer here in Elizabeth and surrounding Wirt County.
There is so much to explore. See you around town.
Bobbi J. Moore, Mayor
Elizabeth’s History
The site of Elizabeth was first settled by William Beauchamp (1743-1808) in 1796 when it was still part of the original, vast Harrison County, Virginia.
It was known as "Beauchamp's Mills" until 1817 when it was renamed for Elizabeth (Woodyard) Beauchamp, the wife of William's son David Beauchamp
Elizabeth was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1822 and became the county seat when Wirt County was created in 1848.
Today, the Beauchamp-Newman museum stands on Court Street, just a few steps from the iconic Elizabeth Courthouse.
The Town of Elizabeth is a purchase system buying water from Claywood Park PSD. With 617,960 linear feet of water line and a daily average demand of 165,000 gallons pumping into four water tanks located around the county which have a 500,000 gallon holding capacity, collectively. We serve a population of approximately 2175 with funding continually sought to extend water to other areas of our county.
